Life has a way of bringing us to our knees. In those moments when our own strength and solutions fail us, we often find ourselves desperate, dejected and hopeless. But as believers, we serve a God who is greater than any problem we face. He is a miracle-working God who can rescue us from even the most desperate situations.

During a particularly challenging season in my life, I found myself crying out to God because I knew only He could help me. In my search for hope, I began studying the miracles of Jesus, and one story captivated me completely: the account of the Gentile woman who refused to leave until Jesus helped her daughter.

Her unwavering determination inspired me to write a song that captures her heart cry. As you read these lyrics, picture this desperate mother singing these very words as she encounters Jesus:

Lord I’m falling at Your feet
It’s Your presence that I seek

Mark 7:24-25 sets the scene: “Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep His presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at His feet.”

Even though Jesus was trying to keep His presence secret, this woman’s desperation drove her to seek Him out. When she found Him, she immediately fell at His feet - a posture of complete surrender and worship.

I worship You

Matthew 15:25 shows us how she worshipped Him: “Then she came and worshipped Him, saying ‘Lord help me!’”

To You alone I plead

In Matthew 15:22, we see how desperately she approached Jesus: “A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading, ‘Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David!’”

I’ve got nowhere else to go
Nothing else that I can do

Her desperation tells a story. This mother had likely exhausted every other option trying to help her tormented daughter. Nothing had worked. She was at the end of her rope, and Jesus was her only hope.

But bend my knee
And set my eyes on You

The word for “worshipped” in Matthew 15:25 also means to bow down or kneel. The NIV translates it beautifully: “The woman came and knelt before him, Lord, help me!” Picture her clinging to His feet, begging for help with everything she had left.

Cause You’re my Savior
Only You can rescue me
And You’re my healer
Lord I know You’ll hear my plea
I’m holding tightly to you Jesus
Lord I need a miracle I’m holding tightly to you Jesus
Lord I need a miracle

This chorus reiterates her acknowledgement that only Jesus can save and rescue her. Only He can bring healing through His mighty power. Knowing this, you can imagine her clinging to His feet begging for help.

The second verse of this song reflects this woman recounting Jesus’s previous miracles, hoping He would do something for her as well. As I studied the miracles of Jesus chronologically, I realized this encounter was miracle #22 on a chronological list I had found. This woman had undoubtedly heard about the previous 21 miracles, and I believe she drew strength from them:

You made the lame to walk again

Jesus healed the lame man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-15).

Healed the blind so they could see

He restored sight to two blind men (Matthew 9:27-31).

You calmed the storm that was raging in the seas

He commanded the winds and waves to be still (Matthew 8:23-27).

You fed the crowds with Your mighty hand

He multiplied loaves and fish to feed 5,000 people (Matthew 14:13-21).

You raised the dead to life again

He brought Jairus’s daughter and a widow’s son back to life (Luke 7 and 8).

Lord do for me in accordance with Your plan

Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern: people remind God of His past faithfulness before asking for His help in their present need. This is the pattern we should follow as well in our times of need - recounting what He did throughout Scripture and even in our own lives as we turn to Him.

Anyone familiar with this story knows about the back-and-forth between the woman and Jesus. Jesus initially says no to this woman, explaining that He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. But this woman wouldn’t accept that answer. She gave a clever response about dogs eating crumbs that fall from their master’s table. She knew that anything from Jesus was greater than everything else she had. Just a word from Jesus was all she needed to experience His healing power. The bridge for this song tries to capture this sentiment:

So I’m not letting go
Cause You’re my only hope
No I’m not giving up
Your word is just enough

Whatever situation you are facing today, I pray that you have the faith of this Gentile woman, trusting that Jesus alone can save and rescue you.
